1.

How can sewage be used to generate biogas? Explain.

Answer»

When biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of sewage is reduced, effluent is passed into a settling tank for bacterial flocs to settle down. The sediment is called activated sludge. Activated sludge is pumped into anaerobic sludge digesters. In the digesters, heterotrophic microbes anaerobically digest bacteria and fungi in the sludge producing a mixture of gases which form the biogas.
