It is also known as the Pierced Stone because it has a small hole on the SOUTHEASTERN corner that enters a cavern beneath the rock, known as the Well of Souls. There is a difference of opinion in classical Jewish sources as to whether this was the location of the Holy of Holies or of the Outer Altar. According to those that hold it was the site of the Holy of Holies, that WOULD make this the holiest site in Judaism (Tanhuma, chapter 10).[citation needed]Jewish tradition views the Holy of Holies as the spiritual junction of Heaven and Earth, theaxis mundi, and is therefore the direction that Jews face when praying theAmidah.[citation needed] The other view, that this was the site of the Outer Altar, would EXPLAIN the holes in the stone which served various sacrificial PURPOSES in the Outer Altar.From a classical Jewish textual STANDPOINT, there is no conclusive opinion on the matter.
