1.

how can we preserve the loss of heat?

Answer» There are 3 ways in which heat can be transferred: conduction, convection and radiation.

To minimise heat “loss” due to conduction, use an insulating material that is a bad conductor of heat. Some fibre with microscopic air pockets can be very effective.

For convection, make sure there are no paths that air (or any other fluid) can take to the surrounds.

To minimise heat radiation your best bet is to paint whatever is is that you are trying to insulate white or silver with a nice shiny gloss finish.
