The white-granite palace in which the Maharana held his court stood on a hill site near the humble huts and houses of the people. This shows that the Maharana loved his people as his children. The people looked on the lights of the palace and heard the trumpet of the elephants. They were assured that their king was there to ensure their safety and prosperity. The people were sad as the flag of Mewar came down and the Maharana lost his power. He could no longer give land to his poor people. People still remember the days when the Maharana sat on the throne and received the rich and the poor equally.

सफेद ग्रेनाइट से निर्मित महल में जहाँ महाराणा अपना दरबार लगाते थे वह लोगों की मामूली झोंपड़ियों और घरों के पास एक टीले पर स्थित था। इससे प्रतीत होता है कि महाराणा अपनी प्रजा को अपने बच्चों की तरह चाहते थे। लोग महल के प्रकाश की ओर देखते थे और हाथियों की चिंघाड़ सुनते थे। उन्हें विश्वास था कि उनके राजा उनकी सुरक्षा और समृद्धि को सुनिश्चित करने के लिये मौजूद हैं। लोग बड़े दुःखी हुए जब मेवाड़ का झण्डा उतारा गया और महाराणा की शक्ति समाप्त हो गई। वह अब अपनी निर्धन प्रजा को जमीन नहीं दे सकते थे। लोग अभी भी उन दिनों को याद करते हैं जब महाराणा अपने राज सिंहासन पर बैठते थे और अमीर तथा गरीब सभी का समान रूप से स्वागत करते थे।
