The ruler of Jodhpur, Abhay Singh decided to construct a new palace for himself. It was to be made of red sandstone. That needed a lot of lime. The limestones needed lime kilns to be cured. They needed a lot of fuel to run the kilns. Abhay Singh’s Diwan started a lime kiln near a Bishnoi village where khejdi trees were found in plenty. But the Bishnois wouldn’t allow the cutting of khejdi trees as it was against the principles of their religion. It became a cause of conflict between them.

जोधपुर के शासक अभय सिंह ने एक नया महल बनाने का निर्णय किया। यह लाल रेतीले पत्थर से तैयार होना था। इसके लिए बहुत अधिक मात्रा में चूने की जरूरत थी। चूने-पत्थर को शोधित करने हेतु चूने की भट्ठी की जरूरत थी। चूने की भट्ठी के लिए अधिक मात्रा में ईंधन की आवश्यकता थी। अभय सिंह के दीवान ने बिश्नोई गाँव के निकट चूने की भट्ठी स्थापित किया, क्योंकि वहाँ खेजड़ी के वृक्ष पर्याप्त मात्रा में थे। लेकिन बिश्नोइयों ने उन्हें खेजड़ी वृक्षों को काटने की अनुमति नहीं दी क्योंकि यह उनके धार्मिक सिद्धांतों के खिलाफ था। यह उनके बीच विवाद का कारण बन गया।
