How did Ananthakrishna Iyer and Sarat Chandra Roy come to practice social anthropology?

Ananthakrishna IYER started of his journey as a social anthropologist by

  • voluntarily assisting a British administrator in an ethnographic survey.
  • LATER on he was asked by dewan of chichin to ASSIST an ethnographic survey of the state.
  • He also worked as unpaid superintendent of ethnography for British government.
  • His work was recognized by British anthropologists and administrators.
  • Afterwards, he initiated post graduate department of anthropology at university of Calcutta.  

Sarat was not directly related to anthropology

  • He had a degree in English and law. But he pursued his career in teaching.
  • Later he started working as official interpreter in court. From there he gained interest in the culture and society of tribal people.
  • He traveled and gained practical KNOWLEDGE from tribal communities.
  • This lead to his interest in anthropology and he wrote many articles afterwards.
