Even the Serbs under Karadjordje (“Black George”) and Miloš Obrenović had only a limited form of autonomy until the 1830s. With the RETURN of relative calm, trade in cloth, animals, copper WARE, and other goods INCREASED rapidly. Guilds accumulated excess funds and used them to enhance local villages or towns, many of which saw new churches, clock towers, or covered markets in the 1830s and thereafter. The guilds and individual merchants also endowed schools or financed individual scholars to study in Russia, central Europe, or the great educational establishments that appeared in Constantinople. |
