How did the development of German synthetic indigo become a source of great trouble in Champaran? |
|
Answer» The British planters learnt of the synthetic indigo prepared in Germany. It was cheaper than the natural indigo. It would decrease their income and sale. Being unprofitable, the landlords wanted to free themselves of the indigo. They tricked the peasants playing on their ignorance of the synthetic indigo and demanded compensation for releasing them from the contract. Some signed willingly. Those who opposed, engaged lawyers and the planters hired thugs. The illegal and deceitful collection of money started the trouble. |
