Solution :Between the sixth and the fourth centuries BCE, Magadha (Bihar) became the most powerful mahajanapada. Modern historians explain this development in the variety of ways.
(i) Magadha was a REGION where agriculture was especially productive. Besides, IRON mines were accessible and provided resources for tools and weapons.
(ii) Elephants, an important component of the army, were found in forests in the region. TheGanga and its tributaries provided a MEANS of cheap and convenient communications.
(iii) Early Buddhist and Jaina writers attributed itspower to the polices of individuals like Bimbisara, Ajatasatru and Mahapadma Nanda who were ruthlessly AMBITIOUS kingand thier ministers, who helped them to implements their policies.
(iv) Rajagaha was the CAPITAL of Magadha, a fortified settlement located among hills later in the `4^(th)` sentury BCE, the capital was shifted to Pataliputra (i.e. Patna) commanding routes of communication along the Ganga .
