How do you calculate tbe valency of an element from its electronicconfiguration?

Answer»

The no. of electrons in the outermost shell decides the valency of the element(atom). If the no. of electrons in the last shell is5 or more than 5simply subtract it from 8(maximum number of electrons in the outermost shell) the difference is the valency.Eg: S (16)=2,8,66 is greater than 5. So the valency is 8-6=2.If it isless than 5the number itself is the valency.Eg:Na (11)=2,8,11 is less than 5.So the valency is 1.
