In the haveli at Uadipur there is strict Parda system. The maids and the ladies of the haveli cannot live without a veil. The ladies and the gents have different apartments. Geeta, a Bombay-bred educated girl comes to the haveli as the bride of Ajay Singh. In the suffocating atmosphere of the haveli, she finds herself a caged bird. Her education, love and cooperation of her in-laws and her power of adjustment help her in adapting herself to the life of the haveli. In her spare time she starts classes for the maids and the servants’ children. She always remains busy in useful activities. Dhapu, her personal maidservant is a friend and guide to her.

उदयपुर की हवेली में कठोर पर्दा प्रणाली है। सेविकायें और हवेली की महिलायें बिना पर्दे के नहीं रह सकती हैं। स्त्रियों और पुरुषों के अलग-अलग विभाग हैं। गीता बॉम्बे में पली-बड़ी हुई शिक्षित लड़की हवेली में अजय सिंह की दुल्हन के रूप में आती है। वह स्वयं को पिंजरे में बन्द पक्षी के समान पाती है। उसकी शिक्षा, उसकी सामंजस्य करने की शक्ति और ससुरालियों का प्यार उसकी सामंजस्य बनाने में सहायता करते हैं। अपने फालतू समय में वह सेविकाओं और नौकरों के बच्चों के लिये कक्षा शुरू कर देती है। वह सदा उपयोगी गतिविधियों में व्यस्त रहती है। धापू, उसकी निजी सेविका उसके लिये एक मित्र तथा पथ-प्रदर्शक है।
