To have read the greatest work of past literature, to have behold or heard the greatest work of any great painter or musician is a possession added to the best things of life. By such constant association, one’s mind is filled with genial thoughts and feelings. Cultivation of a sweetness of temper and acquirement of light of understanding may, therefore, be defined as the aim of one who desires to represent culture in one’s life. As one keeps oneself in constant association with the best that man has said and done i.e., with literature and philosophy, one experiences an enlargement of the mind.

प्राचीन साहित्य की सर्वश्रेष्ठ रचनाएं पढ़ना, किसी महानतम चित्रकार या संगीतज्ञ के सर्वश्रेष्ठ कार्य को देखना या सुनना, अपने जीवन की सर्वोत्तम बातों में सम्पत्ति की तरह, बढ़ोत्तरी करना है। इस प्रकार के निरन्तर जुड़ाव से व्यक्ति का मन मिलनसारिता के विचारों और भावनाओं से भर जाता है। व्यवहार में मधुरता पैदा करना, समझ की रोशनी अर्जित करना आदि व्यक्ति के जीवन के उद्देश्य हो सकते हैं जो संस्कृति को निरूपित करने की इच्छा करता हो। जो व्यक्ति किसी मानव द्वारा कहे या किये गये सर्वश्रेष्ठ कार्य जैसे साहित्य, दर्शन, आदि से निरन्तर सम्बन्धित रहता है तो वह अपने मन की विशालता को अनुभव कर पाता है।
