The Ganga speaks in its own voice and words revealing its thoughts and feelings. The use of the first person I at once brings focus on the Ganga and its identity and character. The poem begins with the self-introductory statement, ‘I am Ganga’. Ganga which is formed of the melted snow from the mountains is also a reservoir of water. It carries the wishes of its countless streams to the sea. It does not belong to a particular gender, but it is ‘both-man and woman’. A variety of human activities take place on it and around its banks.
