  • supports the branches, leaves, flowers and fruits. 
  • transports water and minerals from roots to upper aerial parts of the plant. 
  • transports food from leaves to other parts. 
  • in some plants, it stores the food so that they are known as the modified stem. 

Ex. Potato, turmeric, ginger, garlic and sugarcane.
