How is `C^(14)` produced in nature and what happens to it subsequently? Give equations for these processes. |
|
Answer» Carbon `-14` is produced when neutrons from cosmic rays bombard `._(7)N^(14)`. `._(7)N^(14)+``._(0)n^(1)rarr ``._(6)C^(14)+``._(1)H^(1)` Plants use `CO_(2)` for photosynthesis, therefore they have `C-14` also. As long as plants are alive, the amount of `C-14` in them is constant. When plants die , `C-14` starts decaying and by comparing the amount of `C-14` in the living plants and deat plant, age of dead plant can be determined. |
