How many types of equilibrium based on proportion of reactant and product ?

Answer»

Solution :There are three types of equilibrium based on proportion of reactant and product.
(i) Reactant is negligible and product is maximum : Such reaction is towards completion. At equilibrium the concentration of reactant is negligible. At equilibrium 100% product is there `K gt 10^3`.
e.g.: `H_(2(g)) + 1/2O_(2(g)) overset"500 K"HARR H_2O_((g))`
`K_c=2.4xx10^47`
In this way at equilibrium only `H_2O` is there.
(ii) Reactant is more and product is less mostly such reaction not take place : At equilibrium most of reactant REMAIN unreacted. The product is very less. Its equilibrium constant is very less i.e. `K gt 10^(-3)`. Such reaction hardly move in forward reaction and product is not form.
e.g. : `H_2O_((g)) overset"500 K"hArr H_(2(g)) + 1/2O_(2(g))`
`K_c=4.1xx10^(-48)`
(III) The reactant and products are comparable : In such reaction reactant and product both are at equilibrium. In such reaction `K_c 10^(-3)` to `10^3`. e.g., The following reaction possess `H_2 ,I_2` and HI at the equilibrium.
`H_(2(g)) + I_(2(g)) overset"700 K" hArr 2HI_((g)) , K_c`=57
