In the absence of her mother-in-law, Geeta was to perform the worship of the goddess Lakshmi. At midnight Ganga maid got up and woke up the women sleeping in the verandah. The sleepy women walked to the little prayer room and stood with folded hands. Dhapu asked Binniji to put kumkum on the forehead of the goddess. Geeta did as she was told. Then Dhapu told her to put the coconut, the fruits and sweets at the feet of the goddess. Then all the women and children sang the hymns in honour of the goddess and Geeta ji waved earthen diyas around the head of the goddess. The sweet smell of the incense filled the room. All raised slogans in praise of the goddess.

अपनी सासुमां की अनुपस्थिति में गीता जी को लक्ष्मी देवी की पूजा करनी थी। आधी रात को गंगा सेविका उठी और बरामदे में सोई हुई सभी महिलाओं को जगा दिया। उनिंदी स्त्रियां छोटे से प्रार्थना-कक्ष में चली गईं और हाथ जोड़कर खड़ी हो गईं। धापू ने बिन्नी जी को देवी के माथे पर रोली लगाने को कहा। गीता ने वैसा ही किया जैसे उन्हें बताया गया था। तब धापू ने उन्हें (गीता को) नारियल, फल और मिठाई देवी के चरणों में रखने के लिये कहा। सभी बच्चों और महिलाओं ने देवी के सम्मान में भजन गाये तथा गीता ने देवी के चेहरे के चारों ओर दियों को घुमाया अर्थात् आरती की। अगरबत्ती, धूप बत्ती की मधुर सुगंध ने कमरे को भर दिया। देवी की जय जयकार में सभी ने नारे लगाये।
