How were Buddhist text prepared and preserved ? |
Answer» Solution :(i)The Buddha used to DELIVER the teaching through debate and discussion . Men , women and CHILDREN attended these discussions and DISCUSSED what they heard or learnt . None of this teachings were written down during his life time. (ii) After the Buddha.s death , his followers called a council of elders at Vaishali. All his teachings were compiled in the council , they were known as Tipitaka, which literally means the three baskets to hold various text. (iii) Texts were transmitted orally and then written, categorised as per their subject matter and length . As Buddhism extended to new lands – Sri Lanka, other texts like Mahavamsa and DIPAVAMSA were written. (IV) Many pilgrims like Fa Xian and Xuan Zang carried the Buddhist texts with them to disseminate the teachings of Buddha. |
