In synthesis of adipic acid, benzene is used as the starting material, but benzene is carcinogenic and being volatile organic compound (VOC) it pollutes the air and environment. To overcome this health hazard Green technology developed by Drath and Frost, adipic acid is enzymatically synthesised from glucose.
