1.

If the ordered pairs \( \left(x^{2}-3 x, y^{2}+4 y\right) \) and \( (-2,5) \) are equal, then find \( x \) and \( y \).

Answer»

\(\therefore\) x2 - 3x = -2

⇒ x2 - 3x + 2 = 0

⇒ (x - 2) (x - 1) = 0

⇒ (x - 2) = 0 or x - 1 = 0

⇒ x = 2 or x  = 1

And y2 + 4y = 5

⇒ y2 + 4y - 5 = 0

⇒ (y + 5)(y - 1) = 0

⇒ y + 5 = 0 or y - 1 = 0

⇒ y = -5 or y = 1

\(\therefore\) x = 2 or 1 and y = -5 or 1
