1.	In the manufacture of silicon carbide by Acheson process, sawdust is used along with sand and coke in the electric furnance. What is the main purpose of using sawdust as one of the constituents of the mixture ?
Answer» Solution :Saw DUST used in the charge INCREASE its porosity. The increase in porosity allows a continuous escape of CARBON monoxide , that BURNS at the top of the charge. It also prevents heat loss.
