The LIGHTNING bolt must have struck less than a kilometre away. The logic is simple. Light travels at such a great speed that you see it almost at the same instant that it happens. But SOUND travels at a speed of roughly 330 metre per second through air, so that it takes about 3 seconds to reach your ear if the lightning struck ONE kilometre away.
