According to Hazlitt, “Leave me to my repose.” is the motto of the sleeping and the dead. By this, the author refers to the learned who, like sleepers in sleep, are engrossed in books and, like the dead, are unaware of the things and happenings around. They are not even willing to come out this state for fear of losing their intellectual support and being left to themselves. Without books, they cannot even breathe. Their intellectual faculties are so enfeebled by the habit of borrowing ideas and sense from others that books become their crutches without which they must fall.

Hazlitt के अनुसार “मुझे मेरे आराम पर छोड़ दो” सोये और मरे हुये लोगों का आदर्श वाक्य होता है। इससे लेखक का तात्पर्य उन विद्वानों से है जो, जैसे सोये हुये लोग नींद में होते हैं, पुस्तकों में खोये रहते हैं और मरे हुये लोगों के समान, अपने चारों ओर की बातों और घटनाओं से अनजान होते हैं। वे अपनी अवस्था से अपना बौद्धिक सहारा खोने और स्वयं के सहारे रह जाने के डर से बाहर ही नहीं निकलना चाहते। बिना पुस्तकों के वे साँस भी नहीं ले सकते। उनकी बौद्धिक क्षमतायें दूसरों से विचार और ज्ञान लेने की आदत से इतनी कमजोर हो जाती हैं कि पुस्तकें उनकी बैसाखियाँ बन जाती हैं जिनके बिना वे गिर जायेंगे।
