Imagine if you want to represent your neighborhood on a map, if you live in a big city and I'm a big neighborhood imagine the difficulty in making a map in the real SCALE (the same size of your neighborhood on a sheet of paper, it would be huge not and even?) For this and other REASONS it is important to make a map in scale. You can also make measurements on the map and know the distance between point A and point B on the map.
