Bichendri Pal is the first Indian woman to claimb the mount everest. The father Kishan Pal and Mother Hansadeyi Negi belonged to a middle class family. Bichendri Pal got the training of mountaineering from her childhood. In addition to the difficult task of mountaineering the earned from tailoring to support her education financially. She obtained M.A. B.Ed degree in Sanskrit.

Claimbing mountains was her passion. The peaks Kalanaga and Road Gero mountains were conquered by her with atmost self confidence. She got inspiration from Tensing Norge, the first man to conquer the mount everest. She claimbed the mount everest on 23rd May 1984 at 2-07 p.m. and was hailed as the first Indian woman to conquer the mount everest. Cornal Khullar praised her as the proud daughter of India and congratulated her for the achievement.

For the matchless achievement of claimbing mount Everest, she was awarded Padma Shree and Arjuna Awards by the Government of India. She was also honored by the Indian Mountaineering Association. She proved that women are not lagging behind the men in bravery and adventure.
