O-nitro phenol is more acidic than o-methoxy phenol. Explain why. |
|
Answer» The electron withdrawing groups like -NO2 increase the stability of phenoxide ion by dispersal of negative charge. The electron releasing groups like -OCH3 decrease the acidic strength of phenol by destablising the phenoxide ion by concentrating negative charge. Thus, o-nitrophenol is more acidic than o-methoxy phenol. |
