1.

One day some biology students went for a picnic in a forested area, where they found a small pond in which some aquatic plants were growing. They noticed some bubbles coming out of the plants. The teacher accompanying them asked the following questions. (a) Which physiological process of the plants is responsibly for the release of these bubbles? (b) Name the gas present in these bubbles. (c) Will such bubbles release during the dark/night? (d) Explain the mechanism of the process responsible for the release of the gas.

Answer»

(a) The process responsible for the release of the gas is photosynthesis.

(b) Oxygen

(c) No. It is because, in night, the plant become a net producer of CO2. Since, CO2 is soluble in water so it does not bubble off.

(d) Like other green plants, pond weed can make sugar from carbon dioxide and water. When this happens, oxygen is also made. This oxygen comes out of the plant and can be seen as bubbles in the water around the pond weed. The process is known as photosynthesis.
