Out of CH_(3)CO O^(-) and OH^(-) which is stronger base and why ?

Answer»

Solution :`OH^(-)` ions can combine with `H^(+)` ions more readily than `CH_(3)CO O^(-)` ions can do. Hence, `OH^(-)` is a STRONGER base. Alternatively, the CONJUGATE ACID of `CH_(3)CO O^(-) and OH^(-) are CH_(3)CO OH and H_(2)O`. AS `CH_(3)CO OH` is stronger acid than `H_(2)O` , the conjugate base of `CH_(3)COOH`, viz., `CH_(3)CO O^(-)` will be a weaker base.
