Predict the major product in the following reaction : C_6H_6 +(CH_3)_2CHCH_2OH overset(H_2SO_4)to

Answer»

Solution :In presence of CONC. `H_2SO_4`, isobutyl alcohol first gives `1^@` carbocation (I) which then rearranges to the more stable `3^@` carbocation (II) by 1,2-hydride shift. Carbocation (II) then REACTS with benzene to FORM tert-stable `3^@` carbocation (II) by 1,2-hydride shift. Carbocation (II) then reacts with benzene to form tert-butylbenzene.
