The social and economic dimensions of a country are based on the health of people, their level of education attainment and their standard of living.

A country scores a higher HDI when thelifespanis higher, theeducationlevel is higher, and the gross national incomeGNI (PPP) per capitais higher. It was developed by Pakistani economistMahbub ul Haq, with help fromGustav Ranisof Yale University andMeghnad Desaiof the London School of Economics, and was further used to measure a country's development by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP)'s Human Development Report Office
