Question : (a) As far as permeability is concerned what is the status of outer and inner mitochondrial membrane ? (b) Name the minute, regularly spaced particles present on the inner mitochondrial membrane. (c) Why are mitochondria called semiautonomus organelles ?

Answer»

Solution :(a) Outer mitochondrial membrane is FREELY permeable, whereas, INNER mitochondrial membrane is semipermeable.
(b) Oxysomes.
(c) Mitochondria are capable of self duplication (replication) as they have their own DNA, self transcribed RNAS (rRNA. tRNAs and mRNA), robosomes and energy producing mechanism. They, however, can manufacture only some of their proteins. Hence, they are CALLED semiautonomous organelles.
