Question :Both meiosis (gametogenesis) and fertilization are essential to maintain chromosome number constant. Why?

Answer»

Solution : Meiosis occurs in gametogenesis and transforms diploid gametogonia into haploid gametes, while fertilization involves fusion of gametes and restores the diploidy. If there is no meiosis during gametogenesis, then the gametes will be diploid and individual PRODUCED will be TETRAPLOID (4N), but when gametis meiosis is not followed by fertilization then the individual formed will be haploid (N).
So meiosis and fertilization are two important processes INVOLVED in sexual reproduction which collectively maintain the chromosome number CONSTANT from generation to generation.
