Question : Describe the various steps involved in the process of deconmposition of detritus. |
|
Answer» Solution :Detritus : are raw materials for decomposition Eg :- Dead plant remains such as leaves, bark, flower and dead ANIMALS. Steps in the process of decomposition : (1) Fragmentation : The process of breaking down detritus into smaller particles. Eg : Earthworm (2) Leaching : Water soluble inorganic NUTRIENTS go down into the soil HORIZON and get precipitated as unwanted salts. (3) Cataboism : The process by which bacterial and fungal ENZYMES degrade detritus into simpler inorganic substances. (4) Humification : The process that leads to ACCUMULATION of a dark coloured amorphous substance called Humus that is highly resistant to microbial action and undergoes decomposition on a extremely slow rate. (5) Mineralisation : The process by which humus is degraded by microbes and inorganic nutrients are released. |
