Solution :(a) Before DNA technology, insulin was obtained from the pancreas of cattle and pigs. (b) The insulin DERIVED from cattle posed three problems: (i) Drug elicits immune response in some patients. (ii) Cattle insulin is somewhat DIFFERENT from HUMAN insulin and PRODUCES harmful side effects over long periods and (iii) Many cattle were BUTCHERED for this purpose.
