Question : Oxygen is critical for aerobic respiration. Explain its rolewith respect to ETS.

Answer»

Solution :Importance of `O_(2)`in aerobic respiration : Glycolysisof glucose is DONE in cytoplasm and with that respiration begins. After that kreb.s cycleand at the end ETS goes in INNER membrane of mitochondria, `o_(2)`is required at the last in ETS.
Where it acts as a hydrogen ACCEPTOR. `O_(2)` releases `e^(-)`from that process. If `O_(2)` is not PRESENT then electrons do notpass through Co enzyme. Soproton pump is not formed andATP is not formed. Thus `O_(2)`is necessary in oxidative phosphorylation.
