Question : The diagram given alongside shows conduction of nerve impulse : (a) Name 'A' and 'B'. (b) Write the function of 'A'.

Answer»

Solution :(a) A= Axon cylinder and B = Nodes of Ranvier.
(b) Axon cylinder helps in the TRANSMISSION of the nervous inlpulse. In a polarized state this part is electronegative. When stimulus is applied the membrane becomes FREELY permeable and rapid influx of `Na^(+)` takes place through axon. This CAUSES polarity to change and then depolarization state is achieved. The change of polarity causes potential difference and thus nerve impulse is transmitted through axon cylinder. The conduction of nerve impulse across the nerve fibres mainly takes place DUE to axonal cylinder.
