Question : The spermatogonia undergo division to produce sperms by the process of spermatogenesis. Choose the correct one with reference to above.

Answer»

Spermatogonia have 46 chromosomes and always undergo meiotic cell division
PRIMARY spermatocytes divideby mitotic cell division
SECONDARY spermatocytes have 23 chromosomes and undergo second meiotic division
Spermatozoa are transformed into spermatids

Solution :In testis immature male gametes produce sperms by the process of spermatogenesis. The spermatogonia present on the inside WALL of seminiferous tubules multiply by mitotic division and increase in numbers.
Gamete CELLS located in germinal epithelium are diploid and possess46 chromosomes. Diploid cells of germinal epithelium are also known are primary spermatocyte periodically undergo meiosis andproduces two equal cells. They are called secondary spermatocytes which have only 23 chromosomes each.
The secondary spermatocytes undergo the second meiotic division to produce four equal haploid spermatids. The spermatids are transformed into spermatozoa by the process called spermiogenesis.
