Question : What is apomixis and what is its importance ? |
|
Answer» Solution :Apomixis is the formation of seeds by asexual processes . Apomixis comprises an ensemble of developmental processes that together alter the reproductive functions in the ovule of flowering plants converting the sexual process to an asexual one . Potential impacts of apomixis are (i) Propagation of HYBRID seed directly by the farmer . Seed from an APOMICTIC hybrid will not lose its genetic make up through sexual crossing and thus will breed true . (ii) TUBER crops are currently vegetatively propagated . e.g Cassava Potato Sweet potato and Yams . This will result in the in elimination or reduction of propagule borne disease substantial increase in germ plasm flow and expansion of potential growing regions . |
