Question : What is lignification?

Answer»

Solution : Lignification. Certain plant cells, NOTABLY those concerned with providing STRENGTH and conducting water, BECOME lignified (converted into wood) during their development. In this process lignin, a polymer of various alcohol derivatives, is deposited in the spaces between the sugar molecules, MAKING the cell wall much more rigid and rendering it impermeable. It thus serves as a water proof cement.
