Rama Mehta presents a verbal picture of the scenes and events in her novel. Her characters through the dialogues come alive before us. Both the males and the females have this quality of showing their inner selves. Khyali, the cook speaks to the maids attentively, listens to them but slips in to stir his dal. Dhapu is very clever. She poses to know better than other maids about the mystery of the haveli. The servants’ children shout and run about naturally. Gangaram is a merry-go-lucky fellow. Equally realistic is the scene of the wedding party. The beating of the drums and the sound of jingling trinklets of the ladies and the maids arrest one’s attention.

रमा मेहता अपने उपन्यास में दृश्यों और घटनाओं की शाब्दिक तस्वीर प्रस्तुत करती है। उसके पात्र अपने संवादों के द्वारा हमारे सामने जीते जागते आ खड़े होते हैं। पुरुष और स्त्री दोनों पात्रों में अपने अन्दर की भावनाओं और विचारों को अभिव्यक्त करने का गुण है। ख्याली रसोईया सेविकाओं से बातें करता है और उनकी बातें ध्यान से सुनता है, परन्तु दाल हिलाने के लिये रसोई में खिसक जाता है। धापू हद से ज्यादा होशियार है। वह हवेली के रहस्यों को और सेविकाओं से अधिक जानने का दावा करती है। नौकरों के बच्चे प्राकृतिक रूप से शोर करते हैं। गंगाराम मस्तमौला आदमी है। बारात का जलूस भी सचमुच वास्तविक है। ढोलों का बजना, पाजेबों की छनछनाहट हमारे ध्यान को आकर्षित करते हैं।
