Several cell types are present in the intestinal epithelium, including enterocytes, Paneth cells, goblet cells, and neuroendocrine cells . Enterocytes are the major cell type in intestinal epithelium.

From the inside out they are called: MUCOSA, submucosa, muscularis, and SEROSA. The mucosa is the innermost layer, and FUNCTIONS in ABSORPTION and secretion.
