Sen tries to dispel the following two misconceptions about democracy in India :

  1. Here, democracy is taken to be just a gift of the Western world that India simply accepted when it became independent.
  2. It is assumed that there is something unique in Indian history that makes the country singularly suited to democracy.

सेन भारत में प्रजातन्त्र के बारे में निम्नलिखित दो गलत अवधारणाओं को दूर करने का प्रयास करते हैं :

  1. यहाँ प्रजातन्त्र को मात्र पश्चिमी संसार का एक उपहार समझा जाता है जिसे भारत ने स्वतन्त्र होने पर | सीधे तौर पर स्वीकार कर लिया।
  2. यह माना जाता है कि भारत के इतिहास में ऐसी कोई अनोखी बात है कि मात्र प्रजातंत्र ही इस देश के लिए उपयुक्त है।
