Answer» Hi, I just recently switched from dial-up to basic DSL. My maximum download speed is 12-14KB/S, which is not that much DIFFERENT from dial-up. I was wondering if it's normal for poor DSL plans to be this slow..because I did some research and it seems like even the crappiest plans should be getting at least 50 KB/s. I don't know if this HELPS, but my LAN speed is 100mbps and I use NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet #2 driver. I took a speed test and here are the results:
Should I be calling my ISP? I haven't yet because it's only been about 2 weeks since I've had this service. You definitely should be calling your ISP. They should have tested the line when they did the install.
That's slower than dial up.I can see your ISP is Tri County Telephone in Lawrence, KS. What level of service are you paying for? The speeds should be listed in your TOS Agreement. A ping of 259ms is very slow.

Preferred Service is 768kbps Ultimate is 1.5Mbps Premier is 3Mbps
It's not stated, but these are downloads, not uploads.I have the preferred 768kbps service. But it has never gotten any higher speed than what the speed test shows. So can I assume that this problem is on the ISP end of things? Your ISP definitely needs to check out the problem. I just can't believe they left the install in that bad of shape.Don't assume anything. Have their help line assist you with it. I have had internet problems in the past where I assumed that it was the ISP's problem and in the end, it was my modem needing to be replaced.
So definitely have them check it out FIRST because obviously you are not getting your money's worth for the service.Quote from: Bogdan on June 24, 2010, 06:11:50 PM ...So can I assume that this problem is on the ISP end of things? In short? Yes.Okay thanks for answering so fast.Even if it's a bad modem, with DSL it's the ISP's problem.
You can buy cable modems in Walmart and Staples, but I've never seen a DSL modem for sale. It's a small rural telephone company. I'm a bit surprised they even offer DSL service. You SURE found SpeedTest and CH fast enough (LOL).
