Solve : 4tb HDD RAD1.. Should I??

Answer»

Almost done buying all the components for my 1st build.
I have an Samsung 850 pro (512gb) SSD.  I will run my operating system ( Win. 7) and programs from here.

The HDD are for storing files.  We take a ton of photos and HD videos of our kids.  In 1 year I went from 0-500gb on files.  So now I am going big.  I would love to run RAID 1 as a back-up.  I will have an external HD.  But I would feel more comfortable with some more security as a backup if something were to happen.

If I run a RAID1 on 2 4tb HDD, this is kind of a safety net if something were to happen to 1 of the drives, correct?

Is there any NEGATIVE to running 2  4tb HDD in RAID1?
Can Wndows 7 functional with 2  4tb HDD in RAID1?  I thought I read somewhere Windows 7 limits you to 2.7tb?

Thanks everyone.RAID will work fine as you described however remember RAID is not backup.

RAID protects against hardware failure which is great, but if you accidentally delete a file or experience some sort of virus or corruption, the file will be affected on both drives.  The best combination for total safety would be RAID as well as frequent backups of important files. Quote

If that something was purely one DRIVE going south then you would still have the mirror, but if it was another type of event MAYBE not. If the controller went flaky it could trash the data on both disks. A failed rebuild could do that too. If you accidentally delete a file, it will INSTANTLY be removed from both mirrored copies. If your disk is corrupted by a software bug or virus, the corruption will be done to both mirrored copies simultaneously. If you're hit by a bad enough power surge, it'll probably fry both disks at the same time. If someone breaks into your house, they'll steal the box that holds both disks. If your house gets flooded or burned, both disks will be ruined.
