Solve : Always connected??

Answer»

I have a PPPoE connection to the INTERNET, through my CenturyTel DSL modem. I used to be able to disconnect my desktop until I set up this wireless network adding a Belkin wireless G Mo. no. FSD 7230-4. Now the desktop stays connected permanently. Is this normal? BTW I'm running Vista Home PremiumCreate two batch files...

ipconfig /release name it internet_off

ipconfig /renew name it internet_on

Save them to the desktop. Now when you want to disconnect from the web just double-click the internet_off icon. To connect, click the internet_on icon.

Alan <>< Yes, if your router does not have an "automatically disconnect" option for PPPoE. I took a look in the manual (http://belkin.httpsvc.vitalstreamcdn.com/belkin_vitalstream_com/support/dl/f5d5230-english-manual.pdf) and I didn't find such an option. So, your router is always connected and hence your computer; more, it is normal behavior. Your router has a small firewall that protects your computer from network attacks. It is a "light" firewall and it is better than nothing. Ok, thanks. Just doesn't seem right THOUGH, because even though my desktop is always connected neither Vista or OneCare recognize it. Both think I'm disconnected and in the case of WLOC it's firewall is not SWITCHING to allow me the full protection of being on a public network.I supposed your network is like:
modem - cable to router - router - wireless connection to router (from other computers) and wired connection to router (from other computers).

Maybe Vista thinks it's INSIDE a LAN (and it's true ACTUALLY if your network is like I said before) and because of that it lowers the shields Your network security is assured by the router's firewall. Your Vista firewall disables fewer communications in this case (I suppose).
