Solve : Brand New Laptop having Wifi connection problems?

Answer»

Hello, I have tried doing quite a bit of troubleshooting myself before posting here, but I cant seem to figure out what the problem is. I bought my wife a new laptop for CHRISTMAS. The model of the Laptop is a Gateway NV56R14u. The model of my wireless router is a Linksys WRT54G v2.1. I have checked to make sure my firmware on the router is the latest firmware and it is. But my problem is, the laptop will connect to the network, says it has full strength, but will not seem to get a very good connection and sometimes no connection at all. When it does work, it still takes roughly 30 seconds or so to pull up a webpage, but most of the time it just comes back with "Page cannot be found" The router has worked with wireless computers in the past ( a buddy rented a room in my house for about 3 years up until about 6 months ago ) and our phones seem to connect fine. I have checked with the cable company and they had me do a speed test on my wired connection and it came back perfect. Anyone have any IDEAS what I need to do? Thank you in advance for the help.Assuming this laptop is not moved to a different location from where it works, and the connection comes and goes when nothing is moved, I would perform a network search to see if anyone else in your neighborhood is also on say Channel 6, and if other wifi's are present, then set your wireless configuration up to a different channel than that of neighbors, and then connect to that new wifi connection setup and see if that helps. I have seen before where multiple wifi's within range of each other whether secured or not compete on the radio waves and cause issues and by changing to an unused channel, the problem with connectivity loss when you see strong signal strength is cured.Ok I will try that, and yes it will go from working to not working without being moved. The weird part is, over the past couple days of dealing with it, if my wife restarts the laptop once it loses connection, it seems to reconnect again. She doesnt ever seem to get a good solid connection where it just works though. I am mainly trying to figure out if it sounds like the wireless router just conveniently quit working once we bought this new laptop, or if there is something wrong with the laptop itself, or if I just have some kind of settings or something set wrong. But I will try changing it to a different channel, when I do that do I need to change any kind of settings on the laptop? or just the router? On the laptop you just need to scan for wifi and then select your wifi at the different channel detected. Then supply key etc to authenticate with your secured network. Then you should be all set to go. Only changes needed are really at the router with the wifi to run it on a different channel.

*Also when your in there, I'd make sure the routers default password has been changed from its manufacturers default to avoid being hacked. I write my new passwords with a sharpie marker on bottom of routers etc so that if I need to get into them 2 years later I dont have to perform a hard reset back to FACTORY default password when I forget the password that I used.

Also any other wifi devices already set up to work on this old wifi network channel will have to all be reinitialized to communicate on this new channel.Hi, I have the same crappy computer and I finally got it fixed by live chatting with Gateway. Here is a copy of the conversation. It seemed to have worked. Good luck!

Amit Agrawalla: Hi, my name is Amit Agrawalla. How may I help you?
Amit Agrawalla: Hi, Josh.,
Josh Delahan: Greetings,
Ever since I got this computer a month ago, I have had connection issues with the internet. I replaced a similar Gateway model with this laptop and the old computer never had connection problems, so I know it is not the router. I have seen other people have the same problem when I looked up this model on the internet, so there must be something wrong with it. Please advise.
Thank you,
Josh
Amit Agrawalla: I am really sorry to know that, I will do my best to help you.
Josh Delahan: thanks
Amit Agrawalla: May I know for how long are you facing this issue?
Josh Delahan: one month
Amit Agrawalla: Thank you.
Amit Agrawalla: Are you trying to connect the Internet through cable or WiFi?
Josh Delahan: WiFi
Amit Agrawalla: Okay, thank you Josh for the information.
Amit Agrawalla: Please, may I confirm your internet disconnects frequently and you are facing the issues with the internet?
Amit Agrawalla: Though you have checked the router it is working fine.
Amit Agrawalla: I am waiting for your response to assist you Josh.
Josh Delahan: yes. it will come up with the "Page Unavailable" message at least 10 or more times per day. I have to turn off the computer and turn it back on to regain connection, but then it will go out later on.
Amit Agrawalla: I am really sorry to know that.
Amit Agrawalla: Do not worry.
Josh Delahan: The reason why there was just a break in the conversation was because the connection went out just now. I had to refresh the page.
Amit Agrawalla: PLease let me know the vendor of the WiFi in your system?
