Answer» Specs: D-Link DI-514 router Windows XP Home Edition SP2 WebStar modem Charter Digital Cable
My sisters and my computer were both hooked up to the internet through the D-Link router. Well, she unplugged anything and everything to get her computer packed away. I thought it would be nice to be connected to the internet directly instead of going through the router. As the title says, it's not working. I reset the modem several times until I tried just using the router again.
I hope that's enough info to give you guys a good idea of what's going on.Reconfigure the NIC so that it points to modem instead of the router. It likely is looking for the router to get an IP ADDRESS.Your post reminded me that I had set up a static IP back when I was behind the router. So, I decided to switch it back to "Obtain an IP address AUTOMATICALLY". Now... that kind of worked. I can search the web with GOOGLE and browse the other two tabs I have open, which are this website and wikipedia.
Would reconfiguring the NIC still work? If so, how do I go about doing that? I tried looking it up myself, but NIC can stand for a LOT of different things apparently.Fixed it. Just noticed the "obtain DNS server address automatically" option wasn't selected right before I closed the window. Everything seems to be working now.
Even though I kinda figured it out, there's no way I would have remembered that without your help. Thanks!
