Solve : Can no longer connect to internet (not wireless)? |
|
Answer» SONY VAIO VGN-CS115J Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 @2.00GHz Memory (RAM) 4.00 GB 64-bit Vista I'm hoping someone can help me out here as this all just kind of happened out of the blue. 3 days ago I just moved into an apartment complex where the internet is included free in your rent, so you just plug your ethernet cable into the wall and you are good to go. Everything was working fine until last night. I was surfing the net and all of a sudden, I just couldn't connect to any pages. When I look at the network icon, it says local only instead of local and internet. Now it is the next day and it still isn't working. I know the internet isn't down, because I piggybacked on someone's wireless so it is clearly working. I then tried to diagnose the problem and it says "cannot communicate with DNS sever(192.168.0.1) Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not receive a response." Then there is an option to Reset the network adapter "Local Area Connection" and I do that and it says "Windows tried a repair but a problem still exists." The only thing I can think of is maybe it has something to do with my ps3. I am currently switching the ethernet cord back and forth between my laptop and ps3 because I don't have wireless set up yet. Did that somehow make my internet stop working? Sorry for such a long post, but I have no clue what is going on and I have no idea how to fix up. I'm hoping maybe one of you guys might know what is going on. Thanks.Sorry, I read on here that you might need to see what it says after I do ipconfig/all in CMD, so I did that and here it is: Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : Tim-PC Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : mygateway.net Ethernet adapter Bluetooth Network Connection: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : DESCRIPTION . . . . . . . . . . . : Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network) Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-21-4F-58-12-49 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : mygateway.net Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 5100 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-21-5D-9A-B2-5A DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::6539:3dc8:1862:4b30%11(Preferred) IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.114(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Lease OBTAINED. . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, January 17, 2009 4:27:37 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, January 24, 2009 5:56:14 PM Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : 208.67.222.220 Description . . . . . . . . . . . : MARVELL Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1D-BA-03-7F-40 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 6: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : isatap.208.67.222.220 Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-E0 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 7: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : mygateway.net Description . . . . . . . . . . . : isatap.mygateway.net Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-E0 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::5efe:192.168.0.114%16(Preferred) Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 12: Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : isatap.{1352F306-3746-4444-818D-E5BD23E50 485} Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-E0 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Tunnel adapter Local Area Connection* 13: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 02-00-54-55-4E-01 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IPv6 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 2001:0:4137:9e50:48:22be:3f57:ff8d(Prefer red) Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::48:22be:3f57:ff8d%15(Preferred) Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : :: NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : DisabledI would change your network connection settings to obtain the DNS server address automatically and see if this helps... However I'm not sure how to get to this in Vista... Right click the network connection tray icon and click open network connections if you can. From here right click the network connection that says Connected and then click Properties. Where it says "This connection uses the following" or whatever, scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and left click once, then click the Properties button or however you will get into the properties of this in Vista. Then from the settings here click Obtain IP address automatically and click Obtain DNS server address automatically. I think this might fix your problem, let me know how it goes.I checked that and both of them are already set to obtain IP address automatically and to obtain DNS server address automatically. So I guess that isn't the problem.Are you sure you checked it for the right connection, I'm not sure which one of those from the ipconfig report is the one your trying to connect with. Other than that I'm not really sure. Its having trouble connecting to the DNS server, this could be due to a firewall or someone may have changed the access point settings in regards to your machine. There is a chance it could be due to an infection that's messing around with your network settings... Have you tried connecting in 'safe mode with networking'? You really need someone else's help with this, I'm no expert.You could try these steps, it seems to work for some people. Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in: cmd Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter). In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one: ipconfig /flushdns ipconfig /registerdns ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew Restart computer. If that doesn't work... Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in: cmd Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter). At Command Prompt, type in: netsh int ip reset reset.log Hit Enter. Type in: netsh winsock reset catalog Hit Enter. Restart computer. If that doesn't work... Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml Restart computer, and check again. (Btw, These instructions are copied from one of Broni's posts, I'm not sure it will have any effect for you but it won't hurt).You could also run an ipconfig from one of your house mate's computers and look to see what their DNS server address is set to for the connection they are using and then apply that to your connection (instead of Obtain DNS server address automatically). |
