Solve : Can't access router's status page?

Answer»

I'm trying to set up a static IP address, mostly following a guide at portforwarding.com, (How to set up a static IP address on Win XP) and have come to a point where I need to view my router's status PAGE to find out my actual name server IP addresses. (I'm sort of bottom to mid-range in computer literacy, I had to stop and think about that last sentence, so if anyone here doesn't understand it then it's probably nonsensical anyway....)

My router is a Netgear ADSL Firewall DG834. I've been to their support page, looked at the online manual for my router, followed the link to my status page. As they instructed in the manual, I entered the standard username of 'admin', the password 'password'.....and nothing happens. The login screen appears again. So I can't view the status page, and thus can't get the info I need to set up a static IP.

I'm at a complete dead end, and can't seem to find anyone with a similar problem on these forums. Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated- I'm tearing my HAIR out here!
Thanks in advance.
The default username and password has been changed, which leads me to believe that this not your router, and you do not have access to it. If it were your router you would know the username and password. If it's your home router you may reset it, in case you still don't remember that password.
CAUTION: you will have to do again all the settings on the router (you will have to set up again the router, that means)  Um....it's my home router and it's sitting across the room from me. I tried out some usernames and PASSWORDS I use for other things, thinking maybe I'd changed them and forgotten, but nothing's working.

The router wasn't actually set up by me- a few years ago my parents had someone in to FIX something with their computer, and the guy set up the router for my whole family then. I suppose he MUST have changed the username and password, but it seems very strange that he wouldn't tell us.

So I guess my only option is to reset my router....?Yep.
Look for a small pinhole on the rear of the router which you can use a straightened paper clip to press...yah... thats right
try password/password
user/adminI think your nickname should be bumper...
