Answer» A friend of mine built me a new gaming computer, and everything seems to be working fine, But he had to leave early and when I tried to logg on to the Internet with this new computer I could not. I use DSL, what can I do get get an Internet connection?Tell us about the operating system, and some about the hardware, and what kind of error message(s) you get when you try to connect to the internet. Does the Network Connection icon in the system tray (lower right) show a physical connection?
Welcome to the forum! Windows Xp Home SP-2, Evga Nforce 780i Motherboared, Geforce 9800gtx Vid card, Intel duelcore E8400 processor 3.0ghz , 2GB ram soon to be 4GB. As for the network connection In tray, SAYS local connection 2 Is not connected. No error messages.I'm guessing it's a WIRELESS connection, or do you have an ethernet cable plugged into the computer's port?Yes, I have ethernet connection. DSL.So you're wired from the DSL modem to the computer? YES SIR, DSL to modem.Do you have a different Ethernet cable you can try between the modem and the computer?I used the same one I am using for this computer. On the new computer, is the Ethernet port into which you plug the on-board port built into the motherboard, on an added card? Are the DRIVERS for the port INSTALLED?Aegis, I am sorry but I do not understand what you mean by-Ethernet port into which you plug the on-board port built into the motherboard, on an added card? All drivers are Installed. I got this error message resently...... Limited or no connectivity... problem occured because the network did not assign a network address to the computer. I HATE that error message, because I'm not quite sure how to fix it. I recently encountered it on a wireless connection, but it went away when I removed the encryption (which is not a proper answer, but I"m living with it for now because I hope the wireless will be temporary)
Let me poke around on the 'net...
First, from the Microsoft site:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892896
I was going to post some forum entries from the MSDN forum, but it's down for maintenance, so on to other things!

I'll have to review these, too.Well I feel like Patric on spongebob square pants, maybe I should hide under a rock.I fixed the problem by simply calling my DSL provider. New computer means new Ip adress. My new computer did not reconize my modem. Ain't no big deal! I'd say that's how a lot of us learn stuff. It certainly didn't occur to me to ask you if that was part of the problem.
The important thing is that you're up and running! Thanks Aegis, Theres a few good people Left In the world, WOW.
